The Ion Series loudspeakers were designed with one all-encompassing goal: to bring true and accurate musical reproduction to music lovers at reasonable price points. However, not everyone perceives perfection in the same way.  This series of loudspeakers was designed to be of a fairly high efficiency, but not overly high.  This gives the listener the flexibility to use Ion loudspeakers with either tube or solid state amplifiers (below 100 watts) to suit their own personal preference.  The Ion Series offers the benefits of horn designs at an affordable price. 

Point Source

The ideal loudspeaker acts as a single point source for accurate musical reproduction.  In a live performance, the music that approaches us comes in the form of a huge soundwave originating from a single source.  This is a very demanding task for a multi-driver unit to do because the music is originating from more than one driver, and all the drivers have different transient response characteristics.  The closest one can come to reproducing the sound dispersion characteristics of a live performance is by using a single full-range driver.  Drivers that are capable of reproducing the full frequency spectrum tend to be very costly.  Also, their enclosures tend to be very large. 

Ambience

The Ion Series of loudspeakers use a full range driver and, when required, a tweeter added for ambience.  The only form of bypass that is used is a single high quality capacitor on the tweeter.  These loudspeakers are effectively single drive units and this allows for accurate, coherent music reproduction.  As in our flagship Stamm Series, the full-range drivers are made of paper.  The drivers are treated to withstand harsh tropical conditions. 

Home Theater

To extend the pleasure of high quality and accurate musical reproduction to more than just two-channel audio use, the Ion Series loudspeakers are internally shielded to allow them to be used in home theater systems.  There are several different permutations possible with the Loth-X Ion Series, and two of the best are as follows:

The Ion Series available finishes are rosewood, cherry, or black ash laminate, while home theater systems are finished in black ash laminate. 

Loth-X Ion 1 

The basic requirements of an entry-level bookshelf loudspeaker are that it has to be compact and not overly costly. Our solution to these challenges is the Ion 1. The Ion 1 is a bass reflex two driver bookshelf speaker system. 

The cut-off point for the main driver is set such that most of the music spectrum is created by the main driver and the sole function of the tweeter is to add ambience to the music. The only crossover system employed is a single high quality capacitor on the tweeter. This arrangement of drivers and crossover point is the closest we can get to mimicking the sound dispersion characteristics of a single full range driver, without the high cost.

Loth-X Ion 2  
The Ion 2 is the elder sibling of the Ion 1. The Ion 2 is a transmission line two driver floor-standing loudspeaker system. 

Similar to the Ion 1, the cut-off point for the main driver is set such that most of the music spectrum is created by the main driver and the sole function of the tweeter is to add ambience to the music. The only crossover system employed is a single hgh quality capacitor on the tweeter. The arrangement of drivers and crossover point is the closest we can get to mimicking the sound disperson characteristics of a single full range driver, without the high cost.

Loth-X Ion 3

The Ion 3 is a combination transmission line / back loaded horn bookshelf loudspeaker using our single six inch tri-axial full range driver. It is the first full-range single driver loudspeaker unit in the Loth-X product range and the first stage transition to the Stamm Series. 

The high quality tri-axial driver allows us to depart from traditional multi-driver designs and move towards true single driver point source loudspeaker designs. Absolutely no form of crossover is used in the Ion 3. A phase plug is used in conjunction with the smallest cone on the driver to enhance the dispersion of the higher frequencies so as to create an open and wide soundstage.

Loth-X Ion 4
 

The Ion 4 is a true back loaded horn floor-standing loudspeaker using our single six inch tri-axial full range driver. It is the second full range single driver loudspeaker unit in the Loth-X product range and the bridging design to the Stamm Series. The Ion 4 allows the listener to enjoy the pure tonal characteristics of a true back loaded horn speaker in a small room. 

The high quality tri-axial driver allows us to depart from traditional multi-driver designs and move towards true single-driver point source loudspeaker designs. Absolutely no form of crossover is used in the Ion 4.
